You are warmly invited to The Keening Wake, a taisbeanadh beò/live presentation’ of some customs and traditions associated with the Caoineadh in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Way of the Village will share with you the heart of The Keening Wake research project which has been gathering archive material, oral lore and informed opinion from across Scotland since early summer 2017.

The Keening Wake has been researched and created by three of the project’s artist-performers, déirdre ní mhathúna, Madge Bray and Nerea Bello and they will be joined in performance by Morag McDonald. The group will share with you a rich mix of Gaelic (Scottish and Irish), Doric, Georgian and Basque influences – each of which continue to inform their understanding of the Caoineadh in a Scottish Gàidhealtachd context.

At a designated point during the event, those who wish to will be invited to participate by adding a small object or sealed note to a central kist, in remembrance and recognition of the personal losses they may wish to keen.

We look forward to your company as we re-present and interpret a ‘blasad’ of this important, but often overlooked traditional Highland custom.
